Bruce J. West Recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for Excellence in Applied Physical Science & Mathematics
Dr. West studies new areas of mathematics that can benefit the U.S. Army and the nation
DURHAM, NC, December 8, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Bruce West, Chief Scientist in Mathematics at the Army Research Office of the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, has been named a Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Applied Physical Science & Mathematics. While inclusion in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Cambridge Who's Who membership.
As the chief mathematic scientist of the Army Research Office of the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Dr. West specializes in non-equilibrium statistical physics and network science. He is responsible for identifying new areas of mathematics to impact current army research, as well as working internationally with universities and government agencies. He attributes his success to his interest in research, his hard work, and the support he received from his mentor, Elliot Monstrol, who taught him to never say no, always work toward his long-term goals, and 'get rich slowly.' Dr. West also credits his success to the support of his family including his wife, Sharon, of 41 years, his sons, Jason and Damien, his daughters-in-law, Jennifer and Adrianna, and his four grandchildren, Alexander, Jack, Gabriel and Sydney. He became involved in his profession because he was inspired after reading 'The Foundation Trilogy' in elementary school. The highlight of his career was receiving the Samuel S. Wilks Award for Statistics in 2011.
Dr. West earned a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Rochester, having received a Master of Science in physics from the University of Rochester and a Bachelor of Arts in physics from the University at Buffalo. He is chair of The Army Senior Scientist Corps and a member of The New York Academy of Sciences, the American Physical Society, The American Physiological Society, the American Geophysical Union, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2003 and 2008, he was honored with awards for publications and research by the U.S. Army Research Office, and in 2010, he received The Commander's Award for Civilian Service and the Department of the Army Research and Development Achievement Award for Technical Excellence.
