Cambridge Who's Who Names Betty J. Geis Professional of the Year in Higher Education
At Seward County Community College, Betty Geis Gives Her Students an Exceptional Education
OKEENE, OK, December 6, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Betty J. Geis, Instructor at Seward County Community College, has been named a Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Higher Education. While inclusion in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Cambridge Who's Who membership.
Teaching is Ms. Geis' life and has been for the last 38 years; she has taught at elementary, secondary and college levels. As an instructor at Seward County Community College, a two-year liberal arts and technical school, Ms. Geis teaches introductory courses in philosophy and sociology during the spring, summer and fall terms. She also tutors students at the elementary level. Her areas of expertise include social studies, the humanities, and counseling. Ms. Geis also enjoys writing columns for two newspapers.
Attributing her success to working hard and putting in the time, she wanted to be a teacher since she was a child. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary and secondary social studies from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1962. She received a master's degree in social studies from Southwestern in 1979. On top of her degree, Ms. Geis put in 20-plus hours and gained certification in counseling in 1981. She also earned 16 hours in Christian Education at North American Baptists Seminary in the spring of 1962. She retired from public-school education in 2007. Ms. Geis is a former member of both the Oklahoma Education Association and the Chair Negotiation Team of Okeene Public Schools. Ms. Geis also served on the Okeene Board of Education for 10 years; four of those years as president, and she is presently on the board for a third term. She remains active in her community as a volunteer for her local church. Earlier in her career, she received recognition as a nominee for Teacher of the Year and won an award for Young Woman of the Year. In the future, Ms. Geis hopes to continue to do some public speaking and continue teaching and writing.
