Cambridge Who's Who Names Orpha Andrienne Durgin Professional of the Year in Secondary Education
Ms. Durgin has committed more than three decades to education

ARLINGTON, VA, December 29, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Orpha A. Durgin, Teacher for Yorktown High School, has been named a Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Secondary Education. While inclusion in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Cambridge Who's Who membership.

Ms. Durgin has 33 years of experience in secondary education and currently serves as a teacher in the state of Virginia, the last 12 at Yorktown High School, one of three public high schools located in Arlington, VA. Yorktown High School is a fully accredited school based on Virginia's standards of learning examinations, and by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It is ranked among the top 75 schools in the nation according to Newsweek, and the school has a strong taste for student participation in artistic activities. Instrumental, choral, theatrical, and visual arts are prominent in the school's atmosphere. Ms. Durgin is best known for teaching English to students who have been deemed "hard to reach" or "at risk." She also teaches U.S. and Virginia government classes.

Attributing her success to her perseverance, Ms. Durgin serves on the social-emotional focus committee and publishes the ROCS newsletter to the school's staff. Being an educator has always been a dream of Ms. Durgin's; as a child she taught her dolls in an imaginary school. In 1987, she founded an alternative school program, and instituted a service and reward system within it. She has also worked as a night school principal.

Ms. Durgin earned a Technical Standards for Instructional Personnel Cohort certification from George Mason University in 2003, and holds a bachelor's degree in education from James Madison University.

She also holds a Virginia Teaching Certificate and a Certificate of Technology Standards. A member of Virginia Education Association and National Education Association, Ms. Durgin has been recognized as Teacher of the Year in Region II, which consists of Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., and West Virginia. She was also named Teacher of the Year by the Correctional Education Association. Looking forward, Ms. Durgin would love to continue working as an educator at Yorktown High School. She also hopes to continue volunteering her time at senior homes and doing fundraising for them. When not working, she enjoys traveling, reading, gardening and cooking.
