Ms. Mele-McCarthy has dedicated more than three decades to her profession

HUNTINGTOWN, MD, December 29, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joan Mele-McCarthy, D.A., CCC-SLP, Head of The Summit School, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in education.

Dr. Mele-McCarthy has 34 years of experience in education, and has spent the last seven years as the Head of The Summit School, a private school designed specifically to meet the needs of bright students who learn differently. Her expertise includes the assessment and treatment of dyslexia and other learning differences in children and adolescents. In her position, she develops curricula for students and professionals, and implements cutting-edge, research-based methodologies and strategies to educate and help students who struggle in school. Just prior to joining The Summit School, Dr. Mele-McCarthy served as a Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services in the US Department of Education.

Dr. Mele-McCarthy's career has been varied. She has served on several graduate and undergraduate faculties in the greater New York and Washington D.C./Baltimore areas: Adelphi University, University of Maryland at College Park, Towson University and Gallaudet University. Dr. Mele-McCarthy also owned and directed a multi-disciplinary private practice for many years that focused on comprehensive assessments and interventions for children and adolescents who struggled with communication and academic achievement. Through the years, Dr. Mele-McCarthy has kept a strong volunteer service record, having served on Boards of Directors for national professional organizations and continues her work on research-based projects sponsored by The Dyslexia Foundation. She has had numerous articles published, and is known for her regional and national presentations, workshops, and trainings in the field of education related to oral language, dyslexia, and executive function.

A graduate of Adelphi University, Dr. Mele-McCarthy holds a Doctor of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders, as well as a Master of Science in speech pathology and a Bachelor of Arts in speech pathology and audiology. She is a Certified Special Education Teacher in the State of Maryland and a Certified Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped in the State of New York. She holds the Certificate of Clinical Competency in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and a professional license to practice speech-language pathology in Maryland.

Dr. Mele-McCarthy is a member of the Maryland Speech Language Hearing Association, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the International Dyslexia Association and ASCD. She was recognized as Instructor of the Year by the University of Maryland, and was granted the Rolland Van Hattum Award for Service to the Schools from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation. Early in her career she was recognized as an Emerging Leader by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and, during her doctoral studies, she received the Joan Fox Academic Excellence Award from the Long Island Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

In the years ahead, Dr. Mele-McCarthy plans to continue her work in learning differences, dyslexia, and communication disorders. She will continue her efforts related to promoting research-to-practice information to professionals and parents through speaking engagements and publications, and she continues to volunteer her time with professional organizations and foundations dedicated to improving the lives of people with communication disorders and academic difficulties.
